Summary and Reflections

This was an exceptionally great trip with a combination of a lovely location and extra congenial traveling companions. Krista, Beverly and Mike who were easy going and great company for meals and outings.  Santiago and Valparaiso are interesting cities and could, perhaps be worth further exploration at some point. Rapa Nui is just an island paradise for those interested in Polynesian culture and history. It may not hold much for the 'beach person.' as it does not have many beaches worthy of surfers or sunbathers, nor does it have big resorts or casinos. There are scuba diving and snorkeling, fishing and other water sports. We did see some surfing but when we were there the surf was not very high - perhaps at stormy times it is. Rapa Nui's position at the extremity of the 'Polynesian Triangle' (Hawaii, Rapa Nui & New Zealand (Aotearoa), gives it a uniqueness. We found some similarities with the Marquesas which we visited a couple of years ago but also many differ...

Some interesting updates on Easter Island

  This link leads to an Instagram story about excavations of Moai. More questions than answers. Geology Excavations Archaeologists have long suspected that some of the “heads” of Easter Island had a buried body. At the same time, the “giant heads”, several meters tall, were considered an exception. In fact, if these heads had an underlying body, they would have to be authentic stone giants, at least 20 meters high, to meet the proportions. Recent excavations have shown that the “giant heads” of Easter Island are in fact buried “stone giants” whose heads emerged from the earth. How did statues weighing several tons end up almost 20 meters deep? If they did it on purpose, how did they manage to do it without breaking them? Easter Island is little more than a small island. Getting close and the adventure begins

We are now just over a week away from our departure to Santiago and onward to Easter Island. So now it is a time to start looking at what to do in both places and also other things such as the varieties of food to eat and places to see.  …..and we are off…. This was a better start than usual and we were really ready when the Carmel car arrived which is almost a record!.We had managed to pack into two carryon bags which ,add things easier. The trip to Newark airport was uneventful and we were son able to check in and go through the TSA rigamarole. In the process I lost a multi-tool which    I had injudiciously packed along with my electronic stuff. Sad to see it go but it’s obviously did not meet TSA rules so it had to be abandoned.  After stopping briefly for a cold drink we made our way to the departure gate in the newly revamped Terminal A..
