Saturday 28th April

It was a showery day with so with heavy bursts of rain interspersed with sun, it was typical island weather!! Maeva came to pick us up at 9.20 a.m. and we drove to the 'Quarry’ where most of the Moai were created and where almost all of them were found before being restored. The site is right by the coast and as this was a more windy and stormy day than before, the waves were crashing against the shore making for a wonderful backdrop to the hillside upon which many of the Moai stood silent witnesses to us and to history. We walked up the hill to see close-up a Moai which had unique features. From here the panorama was wonderful.

At this point it might be of interest to learn more about the Moai, although much is shrouded in mystery and everything you read and learn about them is subject to some amount of conjecture and assumption.

The trusty Wikipedia has this long entry and may be as good a guide as any.

...and another article with more photos and information.

More on the Moai

Then we moved on to Tongariki, where 15 Moai stand in a line. These Moai were relocated to this place by a group of Japanese who imported a large crane to accomplish the work. The Japanese took an example of the Moai on a tour of the world to publicize the restoration of the Moai but they brought it back to Rapa Nui and restored it to its rightful location.

From here we went on to a couple of small beaches, Ovaha and La Perouse. Small sandy areas amongst the black rocks which are everywhere on the island.

This was a lovely outing on a sunny/windy/rainy day when the sea and the land showed their best colors.

During our trip we were followed by several busloads of the medical staff which are sent by the mainland (Chile), every year to give medical help to the island. They were to leave the next day

This is an album of photos I took this day
